Degree Apprenticeship Project Manager


The role focuses on the job holder applying typical theoretical and learned project management tasks and activities across a range of projects in the BGEN Technology business.

The job holder will assist the Project Managers in day-to-day project delivery tasks in addition to managing of a portfolio of small projects within the Technology SBU.

The role will also require a strong focus on development of skills through regular application of complex tasks and small project delivery, with a view to progressing to a Project Manager.


Based at one of our regional offices with a requirement to travel to our client and partners' offices as well as our client's sites across the UK.


Providing project management task support across a number of projects ranging in size from £50k to £3m and duration circa 3 months to 3 years.

Direct management of projects ranging in size from approximately £5K to £50k (depending on personal development and experience). Aim to progress to typically 5-10 projects of this scale within portfolio, plus task support on other projects as required by the Operations Manager.


The job holder will be assigned a mentor for the duration of their time in role.

On a day-to-day basis, the job holder will report to a project manager in support of their projects and be line-managed by the Operations Manager. For fully assigned projects the job holder will report commercial and technical progress to the Key Account Manager.

The job holder will also engage the support of other staff such as Project Coordinators, Engineers, Planners, Quantity Surveyors, Buyers, etc in addition to close liaison with the Project Managers, Key Account Managers and other internal staff and clients as necessary to effectively execute the function.

The job holder will be expected to progress to managing their own portfolio of small projects, which may involve any combination of electrical, instrumentation, control and automation systems scope, but excluding mechanical and civils.

Key Responsibilities

Project Delivery

Support the Project Managers as required in the completion project management tasks such as modifying programmes, progress updates, forecasting, managing change, etc.

With the support of the assigned mentor or project managers, develop over time into assuming project management responsibility for small projects which will require the completion of the following:

-Monitor the overall commercial performance of the project, maintaining accurate cost-to-complete forecasts and raising awareness of threats in relation to excessive additional costs, delays or margin depletion.

-In relation to change, evaluate any project early warnings, compensation events and/or variations (or any similarly defined issues) and communicate them to Project Managers, client and delivery teams.

-Highlight any project risks or delays and communicate these to all stakeholders.

-Communicate programme and progress both with internal stakeholders and the client, primarily by means of project programmes and/or other commercial and engineering updates, ensuring these are up-to-date and relevant.

-Communicate regularly with the engineering design and manufacturing teams to ensure projects are progressing as expected.

-Ensure the project is delivered while adhering to BGEN Technology quality procedures.

-Ensure that project design reviews are carried out.

Work with the Project Coordinators or Administrators to support them in completing routine administrative tasks that have been assigned to them.

When projects are fully assigned, ensure all engineering design, manufacturing and installation teams are clear on the scope and programme of works and its technical content. Ensure they are made aware of any changes to these requirements in a timely manner and address and consequential impacts to the client in terms of costs or programme.

Over the period in role, develop a basic understanding of the requirements of CDM Principal Contractor and Designer.

Attend client sites as necessary to review job progress and ensure packages of work are signed off.


Gain an awareness of how the business bids for new projects and generates quotes, such as through identifying the requirements for resources needed to deliver what the client expects.

Develop an understanding of typical contractual obligations across all assigned projects. With the support of the commercial team, this will require the job holder to get involved in ensuring formal communications both to and from the client are dealt with in accordance with the contract terms and timescales, invoicing is timely and that change is managed correctly. Over time this will lead to the job holder being exposed to NEC, IChemE or similar forms of contracts along with any framework or bespoke contracts that are employed.

Health and Safety

With the support of the Project Managers or Engineers, develop Health and Safety related documentation for site works, such preparing Risk Assessments and Method Statements.

Escalate and Health and Safety related issues to the Project Managers or Line Manager without delay.

Support others to complete, and work towards taking on, site safety inspections.


Through direct project delivery or engagement with the wider technical teams, develop and demonstrate a clear understanding of the core technical disciplines such as electrical installations, LV workshop assemblies, software builds and telemetry end to end testing.

  • HND/Degree in Project Management, Electrical Engineering or similar, or working towards this qualification.
  • Good basic education particularly in English language and grammar.

Job Related Experience

  • Job related experience in a customer-facing or team leading role would be advantageous.
