What next for the BGEN women’s forum?

Following the launch of the BGEN women’s forum in March 2022, Ellie Maskrey, leader of the forum, provides an update on what’s been happening post launch.

Gender bias survey

Given we are an engineering company, and the devil is in the detail, we were keen to get more of an understanding of the challenges facing women within our company and the wider engineering community. Consequently, we undertook a gender bias survey, which we circulated internally, and externally via LinkedIn

We received some great feedback, and three initial areas came to light:

  • equal pay
  • maternity support
  • professional development, opportunities and training

Our first forum

Our first forum took place on Tuesday 21st June 2022, with good representation from across the business (although we are looking to engage more people across the workforce moving forward), and we looked at some of the issues highlighted through the research.
This certainly triggered interesting conversations, and we will be looking into these issues in more detail as a follow-up and developing action plans.
One immediate action however was around equal pay, and the HR team are carrying out a gender pay project to compare like for like roles to establish if there is a gender pay issue within the business or if this is perception due to different type of roles, levels etc.

What’s next?

The team is looking to undertake more in-depth research and develop proposals where practical to discuss with the board. We are hopeful we will be able to announce real change in these areas by the time of the next newsletter.

Later in the year, we are also planning to do additional external research and asking a wider cross-section of the female engineering community what challenges they are facing in the industry. This will allow us to start benchmarking our own performance.
