Powering the East and South: Delivering Critical Battery Infrastructure for the UK’s Power & Energy Distribution Sector

Ensuring a secure and resilient electricity supply for the South East is a responsibility we take seriously. Our ongoing delivery within the Power & Energy Distribution industry plays a vital role in achieving this goal. At its core, the project focuses on installing and maintaining battery and charger systems at grid, primary and secondary substations, critical infrastructure that underpins the safe and reliable operation of the network.

These systems provide essential DC power for protection and control functions, including breaker tripping, SCADA operations, and emergency response during AC supply loss. Without them, substations would be unable to isolate faults or maintain safe operations during outages, making this work fundamental to the region’s energy security.

About the Project

This framework is designed to upgrade and maintain battery and charger systems across key substations in the South East. These installations ensure that critical protection and control systems remain operational during power interruptions, safeguarding the network and supporting emergency response. By delivering this programme of works, we are helping a leading electricity distribution provider maintain reliability, resilience and safety for millions of customers.

Leadership Engagement on Site

Recently, Jonathan Higgins MGroup Business Director and Jordan Hughes MGroup Operations Manager conducted a senior leadership tour of the delivery team in the South East. The visit was expertly coordinated by Llewellyn Bakker (Project Manager) and Craig Williams (Supervisor), who provided a comprehensive briefing on site conditions, key hazards and the project’s objectives.

Reflecting on the visit, Jonathan Higgins noted:

“What struck me from the visit was the engagement and interaction between the BGEN team and our industry partners, showing a real collaborative relationship, not just on site but also in joint meetings, striving for continuous improvement of safety in delivery.”

Safety and Collaboration at the Forefront

During the tour, Nicola Bazzoni and Gnaneswar Adusumilli walked the leadership team through the Safe Systems of Work (SSoWs), detailing the installation and commissioning methods in place. Their commitment to safety, for both our teams and those of our industry partners, was clear, alongside robust measures to maintain operational integrity throughout the project.

This initiative highlights the importance of collaboration, technical excellence and safety in delivering projects that safeguard the future of energy supply for millions of customers. This battery infrastructure framework is more than a technical upgrade, it is a cornerstone of reliability for the South East’s electricity network.
