Building on Proven Success: BGEN’s Enhanced SI Graduate Programme
Building the Future of Systems Integration Talent
BGEN is proud to continue its long‑standing commitment to developing Systems Integration graduates, building on the success of more than 20 SI engineers who have progressed through the business to date. This latest graduate programme marks an important evolution in our approach, introducing a structured, classroom‑based training pathway for the first three months of the journey.
As the first cohort completes its opening month under this enhanced model, the impact is already clear. Graduates are demonstrating increased confidence, stronger engagement, and a greater readiness to contribute meaningfully when they transition into live project teams.
Why We Chose a Classroom-Based Approach
In many engineering organisations, graduates are placed straight into project teams and expected to learn on the job. While exposure is valuable, it can take years for consistent competence to develop and places pressure on senior engineers to balance delivery with training.
At BGEN, we’ve taken a different approach.
Our classroom‑based model enables graduates to:
- Build foundational SI knowledge from day one
- Understand key industry standards and methodologies
- Practise in a safe, structured environment
- Receive guidance before taking on real project responsibility
Already, this approach has delivered measurable benefits. Graduates are:
- Asking more informed questions
- Connecting theory to real‑world application
- Collaborating effectively
- Demonstrating greater confidence
For BGEN, this reduces risk to live projects, improves consistency in technical output, and allows senior engineers to focus on delivery rather than foundational training.
Additional Support Through the ECITB Graduate Development Grant Scheme
Alongside BGEN’s technical development pathway, graduates also benefit from the ECITB Graduate Development Grant Scheme, which provides a wider professional development framework. This includes:
Financial & Programme Support:
- £4,000 sponsorship per student
- Regular reviews with ECITB
Two Years of Structured Learning, covering:
- Project Management
- Commercial Awareness
- Risk Assessment and contingency systems
- Monitoring progress and cost
- Personal Management
- Quality Auditing
- Effective Communication
- Presentation Skills
- Creative Thinking
Industry Engagement:
- Participation in the ECITB Active Cup, a project management competition for the engineering construction industry
This combined approach ensures graduates develop strong technical, commercial, and professional skills for long‑term success.
A Word from the Programme Lead
Alan McMahon, Lead SI Engineer, shared:
“The SI graduate programme is something I am proud to be part of. It is a great opportunity for the graduates to have a structured pathway into industry and gives the business a pipeline of new talent.”
Graduate Experience: Engaging, Supportive and Rewarding
Graduates report that the programme offers a steady pace with practical, engaging content. Highlights include:
- Learning new engineering and programming tools
- Exploring PLCs and function block diagrams
- Building strong relationships within the cohort
The collaborative group model has been particularly valuable, creating a friendly and confidence‑building environment where graduates learn together and support each other.
Facing Challenges, Learning Fast
Like any real engineering environment, the programme includes challenges. Early project tasks can feel large in scope, but graduates are already learning the structured planning techniques needed to manage them.
Their feedback is helping refine the onboarding process further, including improving IT setup and ensuring all essential equipment is ready from day one.
Advice for Future Graduates
One piece of guidance from the cohort:
“Try experimenting with free tools like OpenPLC to learn Ladder Diagrams and Function Block Diagrams — it’s really useful for the first week.”
A Programme Built on Three Core Qualities
Graduates summed up their first month in three words:
Structured. Friendly. Rewarding.
