A huge thank you to Terry Labonte, who recently received outstanding feedback from our customer at the Johnson Matthey 3CR project.

Small Actions, Big Impact: Building a Culture Where Everyone Goes Home Safe

Creating a culture of safety isn't just about procedures, permits and policies. While these are essential foundations, the strongest safety cultures are built by people who take personal responsibility for the environment around them and look out for one another every day.

Recently, one of our team members, Terry Labonte, received exceptional feedback from our customer at the Johnson Matthey 3CR project, highlighting exactly what this culture looks like in practice.

Terry was nominated on the spot by a Construction Superintendent after proactively cleaning and organising an untidy area of site, despite it not being his waste, materials or responsibility. It was a simple action, but one that demonstrated a commitment to maintaining a safe and professional working environment for everyone on site.

What makes this recognition particularly noteworthy is that it wasn't just about housekeeping. Terry consistently demonstrates the behaviours that contribute to safer, more successful projects. He is known for his positive attitude, willingness to support others, and for always being ready to lend a hand when needed.

On another occasion, Terry identified a potential issue that had gone unnoticed by the project team. By raising it promptly and professionally, he helped prevent a rework situation and allowed the team to address the matter before it became a larger problem.

These moments reinforce an important point: creating a safe workplace is a collective responsibility. Safety is not solely the responsibility of supervisors, managers or safety professionals. It is strengthened every time an individual takes ownership, speaks up and thinks beyond their immediate task.

Ashley Mason, SHE Lead, said:

"Safety excellence is often seen in the small actions people take when they think nobody is watching. Terry's willingness to take ownership, support others and proactively identify potential issues demonstrates exactly the kind of culture we want to create across all our projects. By looking beyond his own responsibilities and putting the wider team first, Terry has helped create a safer environment for everyone on site. It's this mindset that ensures we continue to deliver for our customers while making sure everyone goes home safe at the end of the day."

The most effective safety cultures are built on proactive behaviours. They are created by people who notice hazards before they become incidents, who take pride in maintaining high standards, and who support colleagues in achieving shared goals.

At BGEN part of M Group, we believe that recognising these behaviours is essential. By celebrating individuals who embody our values, we encourage a culture where everyone feels empowered to do the right thing, challenge unsafe conditions and contribute to the success of the wider team.

Terry's actions serve as a reminder that the smallest interventions can often have the biggest impact. Whether it's improving site conditions, identifying a potential issue, or helping a colleague, these everyday decisions contribute to safer environments, stronger teamwork and better outcomes for our customers.

A huge thank you to Terry for setting such a positive example and demonstrating what it means to create a workplace where safety, professionalism and teamwork come first.

Because when everyone takes ownership, everyone has a better chance of going home safe.
