BGEN Supports Local Communities and Inspires Future Engineers

As a company, we are committed to supporting local communities and helping young people thrive through our school, college and university initiatives. Our recent visit to the University of Bolton reflects this, where our head of sustainability Amy Twist and our partners Tunley Environmental presented to young engineering students; as part of a series to inspire engineers and highlight the role they can play in tackling global challenges. The series aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, with our session focusing on SDG13: Climate Action.

As a company we’re involved in critical infrastructure projects across regulated environments and our longstanding relationship with the university, led by Glyn Shawcross, Head of Design Engineering at BGEN helps bridge the gap between education and the engineering profession. Glyn sits on the university board and provides students with valuable industry insights. Through his relationship, our team were invited to contribute to the series and present to the students on SDG13: Climate Action.

The team conducted an interactive session on carbon accounting, setting ambitious reduction targets, and implementing impactful projects on climate action; sharing real-life case studies of projects to reduce energy usage, and the use of renewable resources – using Fircrest Zero as an example. Alejandra Zazueta Lopez (PhD), a Biodiversity Scientist at Tunley Environmental, added to this and broadened the conversation through discussing Biodiversity Net Gain and its function in combating climate change. She also emphasised the significance of taking biodiversity into account during the planning, design, and completion phases of engineering projects.

We were privileged to be invited to the University and share our carbon journey, in response to global sustainability challenges being faced by businesses.

By engaging with future engineers and showcasing practical solutions to climate challenges, our aim is to highlight the pivotal role engineers have in shaping the future for the next generation.
