Measurable Energy
At BGEN, we are dedicated to doing our part to address the climate crisis. With the built environment and construction sector accounting for approximately 40% of global carbon emissions, we recognise the urgent need for bold and decisive action. In alignment with the goals of the 2015 Paris Agreement and the recommendations of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), we are taking significant steps to reduce our carbon footprint and contribute to the global effort to limit temperature rise to 1.5°C.
Our Impact: Measurable Energy (Smart Socket) Savings
Measurable Energy plug sockets, powered by machine learning, automatically identify and eliminate the small power waste from devices, reducing carbon emissions and electricity bills.
Between 30th September and 31st December 2024, BGEN implemented energy-saving measures across our offices, delivering tangible environmental and financial benefits:
Energy saved: 2,376 kWh, a 52% reduction in usage.
Carbon saved: 284 kg CO2e, a 42% decrease in carbon emissions.
Cost savings: £544 over three months.
If these efforts were sustained across a full year, the projected impact could include saving 9,504 kWh of energy, reducing emissions by 1,136 kg CO2e, and saving over £2,176. These figures demonstrate how consistent, small changes can collectively make a significant contribution to achieving net-zero targets.
Our Commitments: Science-Based Reduction Targets
We are actively aligning with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), which provides credible and independently verified goals for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. These targets enable us to tackle emissions across three key areas:
Scope 1: Direct emissions from sources owned or controlled by BGEN, such as fuel used for site transportation and power generation.
Scope 2: Indirect emissions from purchased electricity consumed in our offices.
Scope 3: Emissions across our value chain, including materials, waste, and other indirect activities.
With the support of our parent company, M Group, we are committed to setting and achieving meaningful reduction targets that align with global climate goals.
Why It Matters
The climate crisis is already driving extreme weather events and widespread disruptions, as highlighted in the IPCC’s 2023 report. To avoid the most severe impacts,
