Leading the Charge in Industrial Fuel Switching: BGEN's Ongoing Hydrogen Trial at Novelis

BGEN is currently partnering with Novelis to undertake an innovative trial at their GPP Furnace No.3 in Latchford, Warrington, as part of the UK Government’s £55m Industrial Fuel Switching (IFS) within the £1bn Net Zero Innovation Portfolio (NZIP), and the wider regional HyNet project. This cutting-edge project involves converting the existing natural gas system to a hydrogen supply, showcasing Novelis’s commitment to sustainable and efficient energy solutions.

Project Overview

The trial aims to evaluate the furnace’s performance using hydrogen as a fuel, with the ultimate goal of reducing carbon emissions and enhancing energy efficiency. Once the trial is completed, the equipment will be removed, and the site will be restored to its original condition, demonstrating our ability to execute temporary installations with minimal disruption.

Otto Simon is the principal designer and contractor; BGEN has been awarded the Mechanical, Electrical, and Instrumentation (ME&I) aspects of the contract, integrating advanced systems and instrumentation to support the hydrogen trial.

Our Comprehensive Solution

At BGEN, we specialise in delivering comprehensive, end-to-end solutions. For Novelis, we are providing all necessary piping components, supports, and equipment. Our team is expertly fabricating and assembling the pipe spools and Stage 2 Pressure Let-down Skid, ensuring high-quality standards through rigorous inspection and testing.

Our experienced team manages the entire installation process, from detailed planning and site management to the installation of instrument tubing and site supervision. We are ensuring compliance with all Construction Design and Management (CDM) Regulations and providing comprehensive documentation and certification. Additionally, we have established secure site facilities, including Heras fencing and storage solutions, to ensure smooth operations and site safety.

At a glance, BGEN are supporting Novelis with the following ME&I solutions:

  • Mechanical Services: Fabrication and assembly of piping components, pressure let-down skids, and support structures to ensure robust mechanical integration.
  • Electrical Control and Instrumentation: Design verification, supply, installation, and commissioning of electrical control and instrumentation systems.
  • System Integration: Installation of hydrogen gas detection systems, emergency stops, and comprehensive earthing systems to ensure safety and seamless operation.
  • Testing and Commissioning: Rigorous testing and inspections to verify compliance with BS 7671 and BS EN 60079 standards, including loop testing and point-to-point testing.

Benefits and Expected Outcomes

BGEN’s meticulous planning and execution are resulting in a seamless installation process that meets all regulatory and safety requirements. The high-quality piping components and precise fabrication ensure a successful trial, aligning with Novelis’s sustainability goals.

By minimising disruptions and facilitating smooth operations, BGEN is helping Novelis achieve a reliable and efficient hydrogen supply system. Our commitment to safety and regulatory compliance is ensuring the project’s successful progression, positioning Novelis at the forefront of sustainable energy innovation.
