An interview with Vinnie Edge – Project Engineer / Manager

Introducing Vinnie

Vinnie joined us way back in in 1996 as an Apprentice Electrician working with the E&I department on various sites across the UK. Vinnie now works for our International department, engineering and managing overseas projects, predominantly in Africa.

Tell us about your background?

When approaching the final year of high school I expressed an interest in electrical installation and engineering. I began to explore various opportunities within the industry and was fortunate to be offered an electrical apprenticeship.

Talk us through a typical day in your life here.

In recent years I have been working on small and large scale projects within the food and beverage industries, in both East and West Africa. During a typical day I can find myself undertaking various tasks such as resolving technical issues, estimating/project costing and general project management duties.

By utilising my electrical design knowledge, installation experience and project management skills I endeavour to work proactively with both my team and clients to ensure projects are delivered to a high standard, on time and within budget.

How has your career developed since joining us?

My career excelled during my mid-twenties when I was given the opportunity to join the International department as a Trainee Engineer. I initially began this new role by gaining experience in electrical design and becoming familiar and competent with industry standard software packages. I then progressed from managing smaller to larger scale projects.

What opportunities have you been given during your career with us?

During my career I have been given the opportunity to complete both a HNC and Electrical & Electronic Honours Degree, which I completed on a part time basis. I have also been placed on less academic but important courses to help me in my role such as; IOSH Managing Safely, Comp’EX (Dust), Operational Project Management and Personnel Effectiveness courses.

Working here has given me the opportunity to be involved in a wide range of interesting and challenging projects, from which I have gained valuable experience and knowledge. These construction projects are mainly for major blue chip clients within the food and beverage industries who are developing their operations, and contributing to the rapid economic growth in African countries.

What do you like most about your work?

There is opportunity and encouragement to progress within the company for hard working and talented employees. There are also many friendly and helpful people within the company. I like the diverse range of services offered by the company as they help you gain awareness, experience and knowledge in specialist services such as PLC software, MCC’s, Pumps etc.
