The Head of Design & Engineering will hold technical, commercial, and administrative responsibility for the Engineering & Design Department, including P&L responsibility, and shall support both external clients and other internal Business Units through provision of Engineering, Design and Consultancy Services.

This is a challenging and diverse role operating across a wide range of highly regulated sectors including water, waste-water, pharmaceutical, petrochemical, power generation, fine chemicals, defence, nuclear, food, and beverage.

The candidate will support BGEN in their journey in delivering clean energy, low carbon solutions that are innovative, sustainable, compliant, and cost effective.

We are looking for an experienced high performing leader with significant technical competence inelectrical engineering, combined with proven departmental management and leadership qualities.

A collaborative approach, strong values, and excellent communication and mediation skills are essential qualities for this role.

Role detail description:

The Head of Design & Engineering will report directly to the Chief Executive Officer.

They will have the responsibility to lead/oversee both mechanical and electrical installation engineering and design together with specialist subcontracted services and related designs i.e., Civil, Process, Structural / Steel Work designs,

Strong experience delivering Engineering & Design elements of highly complex multi discipline construction projects.

The post holder will be accountable for:

  • Being client facing, nurturing existing client relationships while investigating and developing new external client opportunities
  • Department technical and financial (P&L) reporting to BGEN Executive Board
  • Generation of annual department budget to identify predicted Sales, GM, OH, PBIT and WIP
  • Department financial performance to exceed budget expectations and drive department efficiencies
  • Overseeing department recruitment and development/mentoring of staff
  • Zero H&S RIDDORS by departmental staff
  • Applying sustainable approach in design and seek ways to reduce both business and individual project carbon footprint
  • Supporting internal and external sales together with client PQQ and bid submissions
  • Reviewing and assessing tender documentation for completeness & compliance, identify risk & appropriate risk mitigation measures
  • Overseeing the effective delivery of projects to time, quality, and cost targets by personal leadership or directing other members of the team
  • Compliance with the company integrated operating model
  • Championing department innovation and implementation of latest digitalisation driving department and company efficiencies
  • Identifying & implementing procedural and policy changes to improve department operational efficiency
  • Providing effective, accurate & efficient technical advice to both internal & external customers
  • Detailed knowledge of 'Designer' and 'Principal Designer' duty holder responsibilities as defined by the Construction (Design & Management) Regulations 2015

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience

  • Chartered Engineer or Chartered Manager/Director registration
  • Degree in technical engineering related subject
  • Project management qualification (Desired)
  • Strong previous experience of managing a multi-disciplined design department
  • Strong contractual awareness and financial reporting
  • P&L Management experience (Desired)
  • Strong communication skills and ability to influence others within a pressurised working environment
  • Strong experience of delivering highly complex M&E installation designs within highly regulated industry sectors
  • Project lifecycle experience
  • Experience in digital engineering tools and technologies to deliver 3D and BIM level 2 designs
  • Knowledge of quality assurance, accounting, data and administrative management practices and procedures
  • Knowledge of human resources management practices and procedures including IR35 compliance
  • Have in depth knowledge of design processes
