Profile interview: Callum Kirby, Trainee Planner

Here, we cast the spotlight on Callum Kirby, another one of our rising stars and part of the ‘next generation’ at BGEN.

How did you begin your career with BGEN?

I applied for an apprenticeship at BGEN in Scotland and qualified as an electrician in 2019. On reflection, I really enjoyed my time on the tools, and It’s given me a good grounding to be able to deliver the role I do today.

What is your current role?

I am currently a trainee planner, on one of our framework contracts for a pharmaceutical client. I’ve been in the role for the past eight months.

Where are you based?

I originally worked with BGEN’s Scottish operation, where I really enjoyed working under the guidance of Derek Ritchie and the team. I decided to move south as an opportunity arose within the business to take my career in a different direction.

I’m now working in Macclesfield with one of BGEN’s major pharmaceutical clients. The move was easier than I expected as my godfather lives in Manchester and he was supportive – putting me up for a few weeks.

And having spent the early years of my life on the Wirral I am now closer to my boyhood football team – the Toffees (even if they are struggling a bit at the moment!)

What does your new role involve?

My role as a project planner is varied, but at its core it is to ensure projects are on track and to provide the wider team with data and insights so they can make informed decisions.

In a bit more detail my role involves preparation and submission of tender programmes, preparation and submission of construction programmes, alongside monitoring progress and performance.

One thing I find advantageous is that I can set realistic timescales when building out projects for the guys on the job – especially electricians – following my time on the tools.

What do you enjoy about the role?

Lots. I love the client contact and helping to building relationships, and I am also enjoying understanding more on the contractual side of things. I also like working with my colleagues who have given me great support since relocating.

How has BGEN supported your career progression?

Since my early days as a trainee apprentice BGEN has supported me every step of the way, supporting me financially while studying, and facilitating my move down south to progress my career.

I’m not one to stand still, and I am currently working with Allan Watson to identify more training and development opportunities within the business.

BGEN on Callum:

“Callum made the bold and brave decision to relocate from Scotland to pursue a career as a planner. Formerly, Callum completed his apprenticeship with BGEN in Scotland where he showed a keen interest in Project Controls. Since moving down south, Callum has completed his training and is now providing beneficial planning support to the business.

“Callum’s understanding of the construction deliverables required to deliver a project efficiently are what makes him stand out. Alongside this, Callum is a great communicator and has a keen interest in working with others.”
