Purpose

To take a senior role within the LV Engineering function for LV Assemblies (Motor Control Centres, LV Switchboards, Control Panels) , supporting other LV Design Engineers with their allocated projects ensuring compliance with Technical Specifications and maintaining compliance with company QA requirements.

Working as part of a collaborative team to develop standards & tools in order to enhance productivity, improve quality, comply with legislation and keep abreast of developments in technology. Ensure the LV Engineering team is properly updated with developments and standards.

To take a lead role in allocated projects, ensuring all of the LV design elements for LV Assemblies and procurement of materials are completed in a timely manner and to agreed timescales, whilst taking responsibility for associated product conformity requirements and commercial performance in line with company targets.

To carry out LV Assembly designs for various Low Voltage Switchboards, Motor Control Centre's (MCCs), Local Control Panels and Instrumentation Control and Automation Systems. The role involves visits to client sites throughout the UK to carry out design solutions for asset modifications on existing electrical systems, including LV Assembly modifications, PLC system upgrades and wiring migrations.

Office Location

The jobholder will be based in Warrington / Derby / Grangemouth and will need to spend time on client sites as necessary to deliver the function.

Key Responsibilities

  • To support the LV Design Engineers with the development of all LV design activities and provide technical guidance on the best technical solution.
  • To support Project Managers and Project Leads by monitoring design progress to ensure they are completed on time and to budget.
  • To review and check electrical schematics and design calculations.
  • To mentor Junior LV Design Engineers in accordance with training and development plans and supporting the development of their skills and capabilities.
  • To attend client sites and produce compliance reports on existing LV Assemblies
  • To take a senior role in complex site migration projects, leading a team of LV Engineers and site operatives ensuring the technical solution is complaint to client specifications and engineering standards. While mitigating site risks and reducing any operational down time for clients' processes.
  • To work closely with and deputise the Lead LV Engineer.
  • To design hardware systems using mainly proprietary components for LV Assemblies and primarily focused on ACBs, Fuse Switches, MCCBs, MCBs, Fuses, Control Transformers and Power Suppliers, Control Relays and Timers, VSDs, PLCs & ICA Systems for Control-gear and Switchgear.
  • To interpret client engineering drawings and specifications and to convert this information into detailed Electrical Schematics, Panel Layouts and General Arrangement Drawings , to ensure the equipment conforms to Safety, Quality and Engineering Standards and Clients Specifications.
  • To support the functional Testing of Electrical Control Components and Equipment within LV Assemblies i.e. PLC's, AC/DC Drives, soft starters, Inverters, DOL Starters and Instrumentation.
  • To complete test and inspection documentation, conformity certification including any other design documents that ensures all LV Assemblies are manufactured in accordance with BSEN 61439 requirements.
  • To lead Client Factory Acceptance Testing ensuring clients requirements are understood and implemented before delivery to site.
  • To comply with the ISO9001 design quality procedures.
  • To ensure harmonious relations are maintained with client's representatives, production team and engineering / design team members
  • Collaboration with the project managers and workshop staff is essential to ensure that we deliver on our customer expectations.
  • Completion of task related H&S documentation when visiting client sites.

Skills & Knowledge

  • Detailed knowledge and understanding of different motor starters, i.e. DOLs, Star-Delta Starters, Soft Starters, VSDs and their application.
  • Having a good understanding of relay logic and electrical control circuits.
  • Understanding of programmable logic controller systems and associated hardware, including industrial communication networks, protocols and architecture such as, but not limited to Profibus networks, ProfiNet, EtherNet, Modbus, CAN, Fiber Optics.
  • Knowledge of electrical distribution theory including understanding of Mains Incomer protection, LV Feeder system protection, Motor protection and Generator protection systems.
  • Knowledge of selectivity and co-ordination of protective devices and switching devices.
  • Competent technical knowledge of industrial power systems and industrial control and automation systems.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Earthing systems and lightning protection systems.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, Promis-E and EPLAN.
  • Knowledge of BS EN 61439-2 Power Switchgear and Controlgear Assemblies and BS EN 60947 Low-voltage Switchgear and Controlgear and BS 7671 Requirements of Electrical Installations - Wiring Regulation 18th Edition, as well as application of BS EN 60204.
  • Knowledge of cable sizing and installation conditions including voltage drop and cable derating factors.
  • Knowledge of network 'fault-levels' and associated LV Assembly short-circuit withstand strength.
  • Knowledge of power loss, heat dissipation and associated LV Assembly temperature-rise limits.
  • Knowledge of Product Conformity requirements (UKCA / CE Marking).
  • Knowledge of ISO9001 QA systems
  • 5 Years Experience as an LV Design Engineer delivering successful LV Assemblies.
  • Knowledge of Utility (Water, Wastewater & Energy) frameworks will be an added advantage though not essential.

Qualifications

  • Completed an Electrical & Electronic Engineering Apprenticeship.
  • HNC/HND Electrical and Electronic Engineering (Or equivalent through experience).
  • Working towards BEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering. (Preferable).
  • Member of The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) (Preferable).
  • Professionally registered as EngTech or IEng (Engineering Council) (Preferable).
  • C&G Electrical Installations BS 7671 IET Wiring Regulations (18th Edition) (2382) (Preferable).
  • C&G Electrical inspection and testing (2391) (Preferable).
