Delivering automated ticket solutions

Delivering automated ticket solutions
Case study

Successful delivery of a core network solution based around a high speed, high availability, resilient and scalable architecture to deliver real time (internet based) payment and penalty services.

Overview

The extensive expansion of the Nottingham Express Transit (NET) tram system has more than double the size of it’s network. It provides transport to approximately 23 million passengers a year. Construction work of 17.5km of new track and 28 new trams stops is being undertaken by Taylor Woodrow and Alstom (TWA), a joint venture on behalf of Tramlink Nottingham; the NET concession holder appointed by Nottingham City Council.

At the heart of efficiency was the desire to provide an automated, real time service (Off Tram Ticketing) at each of the 51 tram stops capable of coping with peak time demands and future capacity

Infrastructure review

The technology team were engaged by TWA to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the introduction of the OTT machines utilising an existing and proposed long-haul fibre optic network infrastructure.

There was a specific requirement to address potential gaps, overlaps and system integration needs from a variety of system vendors and stakeholders.

Our System Integration Expertise

Based on the evaluation findings, our technology division were further commissioned to define, design, develop and implement core network security policies and associated core network components. This was implemented to strict performance criteria and in line with challenging programme milestones.

Using our system integration expertise and project management capabilities, the solution was delivered on-tim

Security through technology

We successfully delivered a core network solution based around a high speed, high availability, resilient and scalable architecture to deliver real time (internet based) payment and penalty services. The delivered network solution is capable of securely integrating all proposed Off Tram Ticketing LAN, W-LAN and WAN connections from various system vendors across the whole NET structure.

The network utilises clustered firewall connectivity between primary and secondary data centres, tram stops, substations, travel shops and GSM-enabled mobile ticket control devices. The comprehensive firewall and speed of connections across 60km of fibre optic infrastructure enables fast, safe and secure payments giving confidence to customers.

Operational objectives met

Through close consultation with TWA, Tramlink Nottingham and their key systems stakeholders, we have delivered a service which meets the needs of NET and their customers. The solution also provides a scalable core platform onto which further systems and applications can be supported.

Implementation of this rapid network solution enables Nottingham City to offer cost effective SMART card options enabling customers to benefit from the best value fares.

TWA demonstrate confidence in us

We have been further commissioned to provide a system wide network solution to support traffic signal monitoring. This is thanks to demonstration of a clear understanding of TWA objectives and proven system integration expertise.
